Biologically known that rattan is a type of climbing palm (sub family Calamoideae) with long, thin, many jointed pliable stems and spiny. It grows at elevations from 0 – 2900 meters above sea level in a diverse range of forest types.
It grows well at a moist region or a region with more than 1500 mm/year rainfall.In a drier region, number of rattan species decreases. Its mature stem grows to 25 – 35 meters in length but the old ones, such as rattan found in old growth forests in Besiq area, may reach up to 100 m. I love the image of Bamboo in the Island. My mom’s home was decorated with rattan furniture.
The home looked like a bamboo paradise. The sofa, the rest seat and coffee tables gave and impression of being in a tropical island for the way the rattan was crafted.
That is not all, when you when upstairs to the bedroom the mirror frame on the wall made out of rattan gave the impression of a fairy tale “Mirror, mirror on the wall”… and next to the bed the night tables just needed a Margarita drink on top.

Rattan or cane furniture is very common in North Eastern India where it is a cottage industry.
Most homes will have cane furniture for tow reasons.
First because they are affordable compared to wood furniture.
Secondly, the houses being small, heavy wooden furniture will crowd the living space.

The type of rattan furniture we have is a long rectangle dining table with eight chairs.
The table has decorative flowers etch by hand on the sides and has a brown finish and sharp pointy edges.
It has a glass top. We had to replace once. The table is very heavy. The chairs are also decorative with flowers on the back seat and making kind of a rounded triangle tip in the middle and two pole like knobs on the end.
In the middle and the seat it’s like a rattan basket weave type of thing.
My parents had this specifically made in the Philippines a long time ago and it last for over 30 years now. Read more »
I have a beautiful rattan desk and chair that I purchased at a flea market for only $45.00.
It is in wonderful condition, excellent actually and came with a glass covering for the top of the desk which is rolls of rattan, therefore requiring the glass to enable you to use the top for writing, etc.
When I saw the desk I just couldn’t take my eyes off of it but thought Oh well, I probably cannot afford it.
A little later I went back and looked at it again and thought I just have to have it. When I looked at the price tag, I wasn’t sure that it was saying 45.00 or 450.00.
Finally after admiring it for awhile I decided to ask the person who was selling it what the price was and was told that it was there on commission and that he thought the price was $45.00. Read more »
