The Classic Antique Appeal Of Post Colonial Style Furniture Adds Immense Value To The Interiors Of A Modern House
A well-deserved holiday is the best way to rejuvenate and suffuse oneself with a flood of wonderful memories. That’s exactly what my neighbor expected to do on her maiden trip to York Harbor in Maine, a modern town that pays rich tributes to its colonial antecedents.
What started out like a lazy, self-indulgent tour, caused more than a gearshift inside her. She was completely bowled over by the antique appeal of quaint17th century colonial houses and imposing buildings, schools and hostelry, replete with classic architectural design. Read more »
Six years ago I visited a friend’s house and saw my dream’s dining table: big square wood table with room for eight people, one couple nicely sat in each side of the table.
I loved this style because I could have many friends for dinner or for game night.
Last year I started looking for it. My search started on line but there was nothing like seeing the set at a store and feeling it was the perfect fit, except for the finish color, it did not match my kitchen.
I decided to get it anyways, and waited 7 days for the delivery. Read more »
When I moved into my first apartment by myself I had no furniture, in fact I didn’t have a bed, or any kitchen supplies.
When you are fresh out of college and swimming in debt full price retailers won’t cut it. I looked for reasonable priced furniture in every obvious store.
I did not want a pre-owned piece of furniture that I could find on websites, I wanted something I could call mine.
I was driving down Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, FL the day I moved into my new apartment and saw a “Rooms to Go Outlet” nestled in a shopping center.
I had previously gone to the regular “Rooms to Go” to see the prices, and decided to buy from that store would exceed my budget.
The outlet was just like the regular store, clean and set up nicely. The staff members on the floor were friendly and not predatory like at some of the full price retail stores.
As I walked around I tried to figure out why items were in this “clearance” store. Some of the items had obvious reasons for being there, such as pen or marker marks, or slices from blades on seat cushions. Read more »
When you walk into my kitchen you see very modern kitchen with a large handcrafted oak dining room table, pie hutch, and serving stand.
It has no brand name because my great, great, grandfather built it. It was beautifully done with no machinery, but with his own two hands and simple carving tools.
It is large rectangle with leaves, trees, and family names etched in the corners. It has a large tree etched in the center that has our family name in it.
It has been passed down from one generation to the next, and I was fortunate enough to have it passed to me from my grandmother.
The pie hutch and serving stand is hand-crafted out of oak also. The hutch is almost seven foot and can hold three large pies on the top two shelves. It has the same etching on the front cabinets at the bottom.
The serving stand is about three feet tall, and has a tree etched on it with the saying “I shall serve thee.. Lord” on it. Read more »
I bought kitchen furniture from a Millwork’s store.
I bought chairs, a maple unfinished table and an unfinished tall cabinet.
I don’t know what brand the furniture is. I don’t think there is any brand.
I chose unfinished furniture hoping to save money.
I particularly like the take because it as high as an island. I like high tables.
The stools are easy to sit on and eat quickly. Read more »

It is primarily light beech in color, with blue covers on the six chairs.
The Beech effect table is large enough to accommodate 8 diners in comfort, and can be expanded to accommodate 10.

I live on the second floor of a two-story duplex, in a small apartment with one bedroom, one bathroom and a kitchen that has a counter separating it from the combination living room/dining room.
When I purchased this duplex, I had the apartment renovated to suit my own living style because I live alone and only entertain a few close friends at home.
After the renovation, when the time came to purchase furniture, I needed to find items that would fit into the small living room area, which would also be the dining room.
Unfortunately, I lived on a small resort island in Florida that had absolutely no furniture stores. Soon after, I was visiting New York City and while there I began hunting for furniture at its many stores.
I was fortunate to find the perfect piece of furniture on my first day there at a store, Castro Convertible, most known for their fold-up sofas! Read more »
My living room is in a Victorian Tenement flat typical of where I live in Scotland. These buildings were designed to house the workforce of the newly industrialized city and have a typical look to them featuring red sandstone, high ceilings, bay windows and good proportions.
Traditionally each room would have housed a whole family, including a fireplace where all the cooking would have been done and a bed recess where they would sleep.

I have two different wooden kitchen tables.
One is an antique set that was purchased by my father and the other is a Omash set.
The antique was passed down to me and the other was purchased for function.
Oak is by far the strongest, so use that for large pieces of furniture.
Ash/Maple/Pine are all fairly strong, but cheaper than oak. Read more »
